Have you heard of power pumping? I recommend this technique to my clients who either have low milk supply or want to build up a freezer stash of expressed breast milk. So far, it’s been a game-changing hack for the mums I support.

🔍 What is Power Pumping?
It’s a technique that mimics cluster feeding to boost your milk production. Here’s how to do it:

1. Pump for 20 minutes
2. Rest for 10 minutes
3. Pump for 10 minutes
4. Rest for 10 minutes
5. Pump for 10 more minutes

Repeat this process once a day for 3-7 days. Studies show it can increase milk production by up to 30% within a week! 📈

💡 Tips for Successful Power Pumping:
• Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet
• Ensure your pump flanges fit correctly
• Try to relax during pumping sessions
• Consider using a hands-free pumping bra for convenience

🕒 Best Time for Power Pumping:

- Early morning: Many women find their milk supply is highest in the morning, making it an ideal time to power pump.
- After your baby’s longest sleep stretch: This mimics your baby’s natural feeding pattern.
- When you have a consistent block of time: Choose a time when you’re less likely to be interrupted.
- Replace a regular pumping or feeding session: If you’re exclusively pumping, replace one of your regular sessions with power pumping.

Consistency is key. Choose a time that works best for your schedule and stick to it for the duration of your power pumping routine.

Nappy rash is a common skin irritation that can leave your baby uncomfortable. But don’t worry, here are my tips and tricks on how to treat (and avoid) nappy rash.

🤔 What is Nappy Rash?
It’s a form of dermatitis in the diaper area, characterized by red, inflamed skin. While common, understanding its causes and treatments can help you manage it effectively.

When I support clients with their babies, my main priority is to avoid nappy rash. I am not a fan of using nappy cream, unless it‘s needed and rather I focus on:

- Changing nappies frequently
- Using the right nappy size
- Gently cleaning the skin, preferring water and cotton to clean baby bums rather than wipes, drying the baby‘s skin after.
- Nappy free time for air circulation
- Choose good quality nappies with breathable materials

🥛 Breastmilk: Nature’s Remedy?
Surprisingly, yes! Breastmilk has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe nappy rash. A study found it as effective as hydrocortisone 1% ointment for mild to moderate cases. Simply apply a small amount to clean skin and let it air dry before diapering.

🚨 When to See a Doctor:

- Severe or worsening rash
- Rash spreads beyond diaper area
- Signs of infection (fever, pus, oozing)

One of the biggest purchases you’ll make as soon-to-be parents is a pushchair. If you’ve ever visited a baby store or browsed online, you know there’s an overwhelming array of models and brands available. Below is a concise guide to help you navigate the key considerations when buying a pushchair.

✨ What’s the difference between a pram, pushchair, and buggy?
Technically speaking, a pram is for newborns and younger babies up to six months. Pushchairs or strollers are for older babies and toddlers and are usually forward-facing. A buggy is a lightweight, easily foldable frame that’s typically cheaper but less suitable for everyday use. Buggies are great for traveling or as a spare.⁠

✨ What pram do I need for a newborn?⁠
Newborn babies should always lie flat in a pram to protect their backs, aid breathing, and support proper development—it’s much better than being cramped at an angle. For roughly the first six months, you’ll need a pushchair with a carrycot. Many modern pushchairs come with both a carrycot and a sport seat for older children.

✨ How much should I spend?
This depends entirely on your budget, but I recommend buying second-hand rather than skimping on a new pushchair. It’s an item you’ll use frequently for a long time.⁠

✨ What should I look out for when buying a pushchair?
Your choice depends largely on your lifestyle and living situation. Consider: Do you live in the city or countryside? Are you planning to have a second child soon? How big is your car boot? Do you need to use public transport? Do you travel frequently?⁠

🤱 Frequent wake-ups for feeding

✨ Weeks 3-4 ✨

⏰ Total sleep: 15-18 hours per day

💤 Sleep periods: May start to lengthen slightly

🤱 Still waking frequently for feeds

✨ Weeks 5-8 (1-2 months) ✨

⏰ Total sleep: 14-17 hours per day

💤 Sleep periods: May extend to 4-5 hours, especially at night

🤱Daytime naps become more regular

✨ Weeks 9-12 (2-3 months) ✨

⏰ Total sleep: 14-16 hours per day

# 7 Tips for getting better sleep with your newborn

When I support new parents with their newborn, I try to implement a few habits from the beginning to help the baby and the mother sleep better at night.

💤 At night, use as little light as possible. I usually recommend small night lights that don’t interfere with melatonin production. While babies don’t produce melatonin until they are around 3 months old, I feel it makes it easier for the baby and the mother to fall back asleep.

💤 Minimal movement at night: I usually set up everything I need for the night close to my baby’s and my bed to avoid walking from room to room at night, disturbing 'the night peace'⁠⠀

💤 Keep the area quiet and peaceful. Speak softly, like whispering, to avoid any loud noises that could disturb the calm.

💤 There is no need to change wet nappies at night unless the nappy is very full. Soiled nappies need to be changed, though. ⁠⠀

💤 Swaddle your baby: A swaddle keeps your baby’s arms close to its body to inhibit their startle reflex and helps your baby to feel calm. I like the Grosnug and Love to Dream™️ Swaddle. ⁠⠀

💤 Fresh air: A walk in the afternoon or just time spent outside can help your baby (and you) sleep better at night. ⁠⠀⠀

💤 White Noise: Play it during nap times and throughout the night.⁠⠀

Part of my role as a newborn care specialist is bathing babies and showing new parents how to bathe their babies.

Often, I am there for the baby's first bath, which is a special moment for all parents. I find it very important to make bath time a relaxing and calm part of the baby's day because it helps in creating a soothing environment.

⁠⠀

✨ Make sure you have everything you need in reach including being prepared for the unexpected.

✨ Prepare the bath and check the water temperature (should be 37-38° C).⁠⠀

⁠⠀

✨ Undress baby, taking off the nappy last.⁠⠀

⁠⠀

✨ Bath baby, 5 minutes are more than enough for a newborn and I usually stretch it up to 10 minutes once the baby gets to the 12 month mark as long as the baby is comfortable. I also like to cover the baby's body with a muslin or flannel to keep them warm. ⁠⠀

⁠⠀

✨ Dry baby, including all skin creases, including armpits, groin, under the chin, around the neck and behind the ears. I like to use a blow dryer for it.⁠⠀

⁠⠀

✨ I usually use coconut oil or other any other baby-friendly organic oils to give the baby a massage before dressing them. ⁠⠀

⁠⠀

✨ Dress baby. A bath can make your baby hungry, so you might need to feed after. ⁠⠀

⁠⠀

⁠⠀

📝 I normally recommend waiting for the baby's first bath as long as delayed bathing has many benefits. Let me know if you would like to know more about this. ⁠⠀

⌚️ My bath time routine usually lasts around 30 minutes, sometimes a bit longer as I really like to take my time and not rush the baby.⁠⠀

Also, I prefer to bath babies, especially for their first bath in a big sink, usually in the kitchen. Less strain on your back and you won't need a separate baby bath. Later, your baby can use an infant bath seat like the Angelcare one.

The majority of my clients are disappointed with the information they receive from doctors and midwives about breastfeeding. Often, the impression is that breastfeeding goes smoothly right from the beginning, which is not always the case.

For the first 2 to 5 days after your baby is born, you will produce a small amount of colostrum, which is all a healthy term baby needs. Colostrum is a thick, rich milk that is high in nutrients. Around day 3 through 5, your milk will come in.

However, some things can cause a delay in your milk coming in:

➖ Severe stress

➖ Caesarean (surgical) delivery

➖ Bleeding after birth

➖ Obesity

➖ Infection or illness with fever

➖ Diabetes

➖ Thyroid conditions

➖ Strict or prolonged bed rest during pregnancy

Milk supply depends on demand. Feeding frequently, when your baby shows hunger cues, is an excellent way to build up a good supply. Your baby should latch on correctly to be able to compress the milk ducts in the breast and remove the appropriate amount of milk.

If you have a delay in your milk coming, don't feel discouraged. You can continue to express milk with a breast pump or by hand and often breastfeed, even if you have to supplement with formula for a few days. Babies who are premature or jaundiced are especially likely to need formula temporarily. (I know that supplementing with formula in the first few days is controversial, so please speak to your doctor, midwife or a lactation consultant for advice.)

Please don't be afraid to ask for help if your milk supply is ever a concern. The sooner you do, the better. You can contact your midwife who can recommend breastfeeding professionals to you.

・Stock your freezer up with food

Stock up your freezer with homemade meals before the baby is born or ask friends and family who offer help to bring prepared meals that only need to be reheated.

・Get all the sleep you can get

Easier said than done, but try to get as much sleep/rest as possible. Chores can wait. No, really.

・Book postpartum support

Consider hiring a postpartum doula or maternity nurse. While the latter focuses on the baby, a postpartum doula will look after you so that you can better care for your baby. They offer emotional support, help with cooking and other chores, and really make such a difference in your first few weeks postpartum.

・Find a photographer before your baby is born**

Many of my clients realize after they come home from the hospital that they haven’t looked for a photographer yet and on short notice many good photographers are often booked out already.

・Backup is important

This is something hardly anyone ever thinks about, but look into your phone/laptop backup options. You will take a lot of snaps of your newborn baby, and it’s important to back these up regularly so when it comes to the worst, you won’t lose all these precious photos.

・Learn your baby’s cues

While babies cannot speak, they give us various physical cues for hunger, tiredness, and discomfort. Being aware of these cues and their meanings will make for a happier baby and your postpartum period less stressful.

・Consider Simethicone

I always recommend to my clients to have some simethicone drops ready. The digestive system of your baby is still developing, and the drops help a lot with gas release and improve the comfort of your baby.
